Government Relations

Our department represents the Sheriff’s Office interests with various government agencies and officials, including advocacy of the Office’s positions on issues. We develop strategies to engage in local, regional, state, and federal legislative and regulatory issues of importance. We work with policy makers to assist in amending or initiating better policy and legislation that will enhance the Sheriff’s Office ability to serve and protect the residents of Yavapai County.

YCSO Government Relations Priorities

  • Increase reimbursement from the state for Search and Rescue missions conducted by Sheriff’s Office Auxillary volunteers
  • Set a minimum starting salary for Sheriff’s deputies and detention officers that comes within 5% for deputies and 10% for detention officers of other similarly situated agencies to prevent drastic differences in pay. Recruitment and retention tool.
  • Repeal statute that allows the spouse of a deceased Sheriff to be held accountable for actions of the Sheriff prior to his or her death.
  • Support legislation to add fentanyl drug dealing to the definition of homicide.
  • Support state funding programs aimed at diversion out of the correctional system for those with mental health and substance abuse issues.
